Been browsing the web recently with the “show tables” style sheet from a
bookmarklet at http://traumwind.tierpfad.de/blog/?detail=2002-02-20_15-07.
enforced as a user style sheet.
Basically, It just shows you all the table borders as thin red lines. For some
reason, I find that interesting. It reminds me once again that I’m glad I
don’t have to design web pages.
So, todays bit of levity…
A couple of years ago I wrote a silly little perl script to generate
random subdivion names (inspired by driving in cary,nc too often).

Today, I get an email from a real estate developer who is apparently using it
to name real subdivisions. Bizzare.
Then someone points me to this google cached page. Apparently
a real real estate magazine pointing to it.
A little more googling finds a
page about Snow Crash, the Neal Stephenson book. For a reason I dont quite
understand, it contains a link to the subdivision name generator. Weird.
It’s monday. Got up at 7:30am. About 5-6 early for me. An attempt to
show up at work before everyone starts leaving.
Spent the weekend helping my dad put together a shed. He wanted
to build a new one to replace another ancient one. And I suspect
it has something to do with him wanting a place to store his recently
purchased motorcycle. He wants to ride in “Rolling Thunder” this
year. I think I was about 10 the last time he rode a street bike.
Plus, you never have enough sheds. If for no other reason, they
are a good place to park the broken down cars behind. Ah, life
in Statesville…
Oddly enough, after using a hammer for most of sunday, and waking
early and having a busy “typing” day, my wrists arent hurting very much.
Either my chair “modifications” are working, or I need to spend more time
building stuff.

You know, I really dont have any thing interesting to say in these
entries. And the servers are down enough to make it kind of annoying.
Oh well, place to blather randomly I suppose.
Japan Air confirmed
the show with Trans Am
in April in winston-salem. Should be a cool show.
Work continues. Considing I’m way past feature freeze, I seem to be
putting way too much new code into things. But then again, today
I commited a total -43 lines of code. Some would say thats a good
thing.
One of the things we do is send out lots of email messages. It’s amazing
how many people will set a vacation message saying they are away for
_a day_. It’s email folks. It spools and stuff.
More playing with style sheets and html design bits in the spare time.
I am so happy I dont have to do web programming for a living. Instead
of html I get something sane like RPM. Oh dear…
the bad
– one machine lost a scsi card and it’s drive array with amongst other things, ssh on it
– two troublesome errata
– more deadlines than I care to think about
– attempting to actually run some test cases in the meantime
– trying to convey how to edit style sheets to someone who
doesnt know _any_ html/xml/css/ or much of anything about computers
– more thinking on the “generic way of handling special cases” TODO list
item that seems more absurd everytime I think about it
– wrist pain that seems to be starting earlier and earlier everyday. The
new chairs _suck_.
– meeting in the wee hours tomorow. Well, okay, 10am, but…
– completely forgot about sami’s birthday party. Doh.
the good
– jeremy seems intent on fixing the last one or two remaining bootloader
related bugs that can cause up2date to fail once in a while
– seem to be passing the automated test cases pretty consistently
– have at least sane versions of up2date in all the trees atm
– had fresh beef stew from the crock pot for breakfast
Blasting Ozric Tentacles as loud as I can seems to help. At least,
I’ll keep telling myself that.
Hmm, busy day. Got automated test cases running in a handful of chroots all over
my laptop.

New kernel errata today. Thats always fun on the bandwidth.
Probabaly going to head over to Kings to catch the John Vanderslice show
tonight. John Ray says it will be a good show, and he seems to have pretty
good taste. Anyone else planning on going?
hmm, did a whole bunch of nothing over the weekend. Aside from leaving
my car door open just enough to have a dead battery this morning. For
some reason i’ve never had much luck with car batteries.

proper symbols to be used on maps for “Area to be gassed” and “gassed area to be avoided”.
A “collective” of folks who build weird ass effects pedals and other noisemakers, half
tempted to try building one myself (they provide schematics, assembly instructions, and
inexpensize kits of parts). Sounds like fun.

Grabbed some sushi from sushi tsune for dinner. Not bad, since
it’s sorta on the way home and open late, might be dropping by
more often.
I wonder how much quiet classical music drifting from nearby cubes one can
stand before going nuts. I shall soon find out. In the mean time, there will
be a lot of headphone wearing going on.
Listening to the first Tin Machine album at the moment. I had forgotten
how good this album was. Odd that Tin Machine was basically
a huge flop.
Third day in a row that I’ve had a headache at work. I would tend
to blame it on the new building, but I seem to be getting them before
getting to work.
Oddly seem to be having a high rate of success communicating with
a notoriusly “out of phase” coworker. I’m not sure if thats the cause of
the headaches or a sympton. /me waves hands around arbitrarily to
illustrate insanely complex ideas.
First day in the new office. Still kind of adjusting. It’s kind of weird so far. It’s
noisy, and the floor shakes when people walk buy. Lighting seems a bit
odd as well. Started the day off with a headache before I even got to
work, so perhaps I’m exageratting.
Lots of driving this weekend, especially since I havent gotten my tires
fixed yet. Up to Asheville and back. Caught another Lake Trout/Japan
Air show, then hung out in winston salem for a while. Ate way too
much sushi.

Godspeed in particular seems to be excellent “driving in the
mountains” music.
Looks like Japan Air is going to open for Trans Am at a show
at ps211/”the wherehouse” in winston-salem in April. Cool.
